Box Elder


Box Elder (boxeldermaple, maple ash, Manitoba Maple)

Order: Sapindales
Family: Sapindaceae
Genus: Acer
Species: A. negundo

Identifying Characteristics:
Often has several trunks,
branches are smooth, and remain so, instead of a bark layer.
Bark - pale gray, light brown, deeply cleft into broad ridges, scaly.
Leaves - pinnately compound (3-7 leaflets), (simple leaves can also be present), no lobes are located on the leaf
Flowers - small, droopy, appear in spring.

Special Adaptions:
0-Likes bright sunlight, often grows on flood plains and other areas with ample water.
