Oak Hickory Forest




White Avens

Order: Rosales

Family: Rosaceae

Genus: Geum
Species: G. Canadense

Identifying characteristics:
Basal leaves with 1 or 3 large leaflets, several smaller leaflets along the stalk mostly of 3 toothed. White flowers 1/2 " with 5 petals. Stem smooth to slightly hairy.
The fruiting cluster spans about 3/4" across. It is initially green, but eventually turns brown. Have large hooked bristles.

Special Adaptations:
The white Aven can live in a variety of habitats adjusting to shade and water leavels. The flower attracts various insects (bees, wasps, flies and beetles) that suck the flowers nectar. Although mammals do not eat the leaves the seed can get hooked on fur and clothing for wider seed distribution
