Lowland forest - red belt mushrooms


Red Belt Mushroom

Order: Polyporales
Family:Fomitopsidaceae
Genus: Fomitipsis
Species F. pinicola

Characteristics
-Large think, woody bracket attached at one side to wood. Upper face mostly brown, gray, with a white to red banded near margin when fresh. Flesh is corky to woody, and pore surface is white to yellow, no stalk.
-grows on live or dead coniferous (less common on deciduous trees)



Adaptations
-Are able to live over most of North America, Mostly live in coniferous forest ecosystems to live off of.
